VERBS: not just 'doing' words



Verbs can change their tense (eg past, present and future)                   
She sang well. 
She 
sings well. 
She 
will sing well.

Verbs can be 
simple (one word)  or compound (more than one word).                    
He reads.                                 
He
 is reading

Verbs are conjugated (change their form according to the person they apply to).
I swim                                                           
you swim                                                       
he she/she/it swims               
we swim
you (plur) swim
they swim

I 
am                                                              
you
 are                                     
he/she it is                           
we  are 
you (plur) are
they are

Verbs are active or  passive.
The dog bit the man (active)
The man was bitten by the dog. (passive)

Verbs are transitive (they have a direct object) or intransitive (they have no direct object).  Dictionaries may show this with the abbreviations vt or ​vi.
I read a book. (transitive)
I exist. (intransitive
